The Defiant Campaign

Four soldiers, four styles, one War of Resistance.

Campaign Overview

The Defiant’s main mode is a single-player campaign aimed at about fifteen hours. That number comes from developer conversations during press events, not from a shipped runtime, so treat it as a target. What is solid: four main chapters spanning a long stretch of the Second Sino-Japanese War, each built around a different Chinese soldier, a different region, and a different mix of verbs. You will not play one silent protagonist from boot camp to victory parade.

This page is a structure guide, not a beat-by-beat walkthrough. The story is unreleased. We describe settings and gameplay styles that Hoothanes, 4Divinity, and IGN have already put in public, then point you to deeper pages such as Shanghai stealth and how to play.

Why the campaign is split

China’s War of Resistance ran for years before Pearl Harbor and continued until 1945. A single infantryman cannot honestly cover snowy Manchuria, neon Shanghai, rail corridors, and later set-piece battles. Hoothanes’ answer is an anthology: fictional leads, real geographies, battles rebuilt from research. Later coverage also names the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army and the Canal Detachment as historical touchstones. The gamescom trailer framed ordinary soldiers and resistance fighters rather than superhuman special operators.

4Divinity’s store copy walks you through snowy forest, heavily guarded lanes, and villages behind enemy lines. Press materials add occupied villages, fortified supply routes, and enemy-held city blocks. Every plant and brick, the studio likes to say, is there to recount a fact. That is marketing language, but it tells you the campaign’s job: make the Eastern theatre feel specific, not a reskin of Normandy.

Chapter styles we can name

Northeast guerrilla fighting. IGN’s hands-on took place in snowy mountains of China’s northeast. It was combat-heavy: caves, trenches, flaming homesteads, a Liao Type 13 bolt-action, and a last-moment execution scene interrupted by an off-screen ally. If you want the gunfeel write-up, that slice lives in How to Play. The full chapter page is northeast campaign.

Shanghai spy work. One chapter puts you in neon-soaked Shanghai as a Chinese spy gathering intelligence on the Imperial Japanese Army. Stealth and puzzle-solving matter more than a trench push. Details, including searchlights and urban cover, are on Shanghai stealth.

Rail sabotage. Another chapter is built around reducing rail lines to rubble with explosives so Japanese supply can no longer move. Expect demolition objectives, patrols, and the kind of linear-but-tense spaces WWII campaigns have used since Allied Assault, pointed at Chinese geography instead of the French countryside.

Seasonal and regional swing. Reporting around ChinaJoy described the campaign moving across seasons and stages of the conflict. A later trailer highlighted 1942 fighting near the Futuya Great Wall and soldiers of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army in snow-covered forest. Do not treat those as four tidy DLC maps; they are examples of the anthology’s range.

Other mission verbs from the publisher — sniping, code-breaking, vehicular combat, sudden large-scale assaults — have been promised but not fully shown. This wiki will not assign them to a chapter number until Hoothanes does.

Companion, audio, and tone

4Divinity’s game page mentions a loyal companion who adds emotional weight. That companion has not been named in English previews. Audio in the hands-on was Chinese with subtitles; an English dub is planned. Mature descriptors on Steam include frequent violence or gore. The IGN mission ended with captured comrades executed in front of the player. This is not a jaunty arcade war.

How co-op fits (it does not, in story)

You cannot co-op the campaign. PvE co-op is a separate playlist using campaign-inspired maps. If your group wants a shared story, this is not that game. If you want a long solo campaign and an optional horde-like side mode, that is the split Hoothanes described.

How to read trailers without getting lost

Official videos jump between forest firefights, city nights, and train-side action. Use this page as the skeleton, the trailers page as the filmography, and the weapons hub when a rifle close-up appears. The gamescom 2026 recap is the best snapshot of what Western press saw in Cologne.

When the game ships, this article will grow mission lists, collectible notes, and difficulty recommendations. Until then, the useful move is to wishlist, learn the four-style promise, and avoid spoiler leaks that are not from the developer.
