The Defiant Controls

What Steam lists and what IGN actually pressed in the preview build.

Last updated:

Controls and Accessibility

The Defiant has not published a keyboard overlay or a bind list. This page is the control and accessibility sheet using two public sources: Steam’s store flags and IGN’s July 2026 hands-on. If a later patch adds jump, prone, or a gadget wheel, those lines will move. Pair this with How to Play for gunfeel and with Getting Started if you still need the wishlist path.

What Steam already promises

Steam marks full controller support, including Xbox controllers. That is a product flag, not a screenshot of an in-game remap screen. Keyboard and mouse are assumed on PC. There is no published list of default WASD, ADS, melee, or grenade keys. Do not copy a Call of Duty bind table into this wiki.

Accessibility categories already on the store: adjustable text size, subtitle options, color alternatives, camera comfort, custom volume controls, stereo sound, adjustable difficulty, and save anytime. Captions are listed as a feature. Those toggles matter because the preview used Chinese performances with translated subtitles, and an English dub is still planned for release — see platforms.

What IGN actually used

The northeast mountain demo behaved like a grounded WWII shooter:

  • Look, fire, aim down sights, reload, swap between two guns, throw grenades, melee / QTE struggle.
  • Run and slide into cover.
  • Crouch is available.
  • No jump, no vault, no prone in that build. Waist-high walls did not always hide you because you could not get low enough.
  • Health is a blood vignette, not a medkit button. Taking cover is the heal.

Hoothanes told previewers mobility and HUD (incoming-fire direction) are still iterating. Treat the no-jump rule as a preview fact, not a forever law. Until a control options screenshot exists, plan around a heavy soldier, not a parkour kit.

Controller versus mouse

If you play with a pad, Steam’s full-controller flag is the only official comfort. Aim assist strength is unpublished. If you play mouse and keyboard, expect a standard FPS cluster. The system requirements page is about RAM and storage, not DPI.

On console, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series are confirmed SKUs with no DualSense adaptive-trigger write-up. Do not invent haptics.

How this changes chapter play

The northeast campaign slice is all firefight: slide, crouch, bolt, repeat. The Shanghai stealth chapter will punish the same aggression if searchlights and patrols work as advertised. A missing prone button hurts stealth more than it hurts a trench rush. Keep that in mind when you pick a second gun from sidearms.

PvE co-op has no published ping-wheel or revive bind. Assume the same two-gun plus grenade rule until a mode trailer shows otherwise.

Practice list for launch day

  1. Open whatever tutorial or range the game ships and confirm jump/vault/prone yourself — do not trust this page blindly after a day-one patch.
  2. Bind grenade and melee where you can reach them without leaving ADS if the menu allows it.
  3. Turn on subtitles even if you use the English dub; battlefield shouts were dense in the preview.
  4. If color alternatives exist, test them in snow and neon — both appear in the campaign overview.
  5. Recheck updates after each trailer for HUD changes.

This is not a complete manual. It is the honest subset of buttons we can name without guessing.
